No account needed to start

You can use the core of NestChinese without creating an account. When you do, your learning progress — streak, honey points, study plan, placement result, practice history, and mistakes — is stored only on your device and is not sent to us.

What we collect if you sign up

If you create an optional account to sync across devices, we collect and store:

• Your email address and, optionally, a display name;
• A securely hashed password (we never store it in plain text);
• Your learning progress, so it can be restored on your other devices.

Speaking practice

Text is read aloud on your device using your device’s built-in speech engine. If you use pronunciation feedback, your recording may be processed by a third-party speech service to score it and is not retained afterward.

Analytics & cookies

We use Google Analytics 4 and PostHog to understand how NestChinese is used, so we can see which parts are confusing and improve them. PostHog automatically records your interactions with the app — the pages you open, the elements you click, and when you leave a page (a feature called autocapture) — together with your approximate location (country/region level, from your IP address), device type and browser.

This data is used only to improve NestChinese. We do not sell it, and we do not use it for advertising or to build advertising profiles. We do not link it to your account: analytics events are recorded without your name or email.

Your consent controls this:

• PostHog is not loaded at all until you choose “Accept” on the cookie banner;
• Google Analytics runs in consent mode: before you accept, it stores no analytics cookies or identifiers on your device, and it is upgraded to full measurement only after you accept;

Besides the analytics cookies described above, we use a cookie to remember your consent choice and, if you create an account, cookies that keep you signed in. We use no advertising cookies.

Withdrawing consent. Declining costs you no functionality. To withdraw consent after accepting, clear this site’s cookies in your browser settings: that removes the stored choice and the analytics cookies, stops PostHog from loading, returns Google Analytics to its restricted state, and the banner will ask you again on your next visit.

Who processes your data

We use a small number of trusted service providers:

• Neon — database hosting (servers located in the United States);
• Cloudflare — application hosting and content delivery (our servers run on Cloudflare Workers), and hosting of the audio files the app plays (Cloudflare R2);
• OpenRouter — the AI model provider behind essay feedback, the speaking partner and snap-to-learn. What you submit there (your text, or the photo you take) is processed and sent straight back; it is not used to train models;
• Microsoft Azure Speech — pronunciation scoring. Your recording is scored and discarded; we never store the audio;
• RevenueCat — subscription receipts. It never sees your card details: payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google;
• Resend — sending and receiving email;

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not show third-party advertising.

Your choices & rights

• Access or correct your account information at any time;
• Delete your account yourself, from inside the app. Sign in, open the Me tab (the profile icon on larger screens), tap Account settings, then, under Delete account, tap Delete my account and confirm with your password. This permanently removes your account and the progress synced to it. You must be signed in to reach this screen; if you are signed out, the Account settings screen asks you to sign in first;
• Withdraw your analytics consent at any time, as described under “Analytics & cookies” above;
• Use the app without an account to keep all data on your device only.

Children

NestChinese is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
